About the Counseling Process
Overcoming bad habits and behaviors
Do you have habits or behaviors that you just can’t seem to stop? You’ve wanted to change, but you just don’t know how.
The whole principle of therapy pertains to awareness of, connection with, and healing from our past. Therapy is the invitation to change.
Awareness
The adage goes, “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for they become destiny.”
Many of us are creatures of habit. We do things without thinking about it, thoughts of which we are unaware. We have bad habits that we have tried to get rid of but just can’t seem to overcome. We sometimes feel disconnected from life, like we’re simply going through the motions.
The therapeutic process is all about helping you gain awareness of your negative thoughts, feelings, and actions. Because once we change our thoughts, actions follow.
Connection
We are all built for relationships, because we are wired from infancy to connect with parents and loved ones.
During these formative first years, we develop what we in the counseling field refer to as attachments, our emotional connections to and relationships with others. Connections and relationships provide safety for us to be ourselves, to be vulnerable, and to explore our world.
Sometimes, because of our own wiring, traumatic experiences, the way we were parented, we are unable to fully and healthily attach.
The counseling process aims to create high levels of emotional safety, empathy, and connection in order to build a solid relationship between therapist and client. This lays the foundation for healthy attachments.
Healing
Therapy stirs up the emotional pain, hurt, and loss that we have become unaware of; the things that are simply too hard to acknowledge. As a result, uncomfortable feelings arise. You might get sad, anxious, or even feel some shame.
In walking through your story and unpacking some of the traumatic or challenging moments, we get the opportunity to journey through these difficulties together.
You no longer need to bear the weight of it alone, because I will sit with you during these moments. We will work through this together, so you can heal from the inside out.
About Me
My personality and temperament suit this profession. I’m a deep thinker, a good listener, and have a presence that allows people to feel safe in opening up and sharing their innermost secrets.
Right out of high school, I wasn’t completely set on what I wanted to do with my life or even what I was good at; so I decided to take several years and travel the world with an international drama company.
I had the opportunity over six years of travelling to live in many wonderful places such as Alaska, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, England, and many more. We were itinerant, staying with families during our travels, and I quickly learned that the people we stayed with found it very easy to talk to me about their lives.
After picking up a couple basic books on counseling, I realized that this would be my career path. When I returned to the States after being abroad, I began my 14-year educational journey and ended up with a Ph.D. in Professional Counseling. Along the way I did a great deal of my own work and went to counseling myself to work through my own issues that make me, me.
I live in Ashburn, Virginia, and have two amazing adult daughters. I am a native Vermonter, enjoy camping, love a good rye whiskey, and an occasional cigar. I am a movie buff, a casual fly fisherman, and enjoy being in nature or possibly binge-watching Netflix.
What I promise you is to be empathic, safe, non-judgmental, kind-hearted, and sincere, as we delve into the life-changing process of counseling.
During my doctoral studies, I learned to be curious, to truly see people, and to love others unconditionally. I treat every new client as an individual with their own story to tell and enjoy building relationships with each and every one!
